URBAN METABOLISM

Concepts: Sustainability of the cities, pollution, social qualities and other attributes and amenities are related to urban metabolism (Wolman, 1965). Wolman compared the overall fluxes of energy, water, materials, and wastes in a hypothetical urban community of one million. He used the concept to address evident shortages of water and pollution of water and air and was concerned, 45 years ago, about the deteriorating state of the urban environment, high pollution, and overuse of resources. Wolman was the first to define urban metabolism, also stating that it must be sustainable (Hermanowitz and Asano, 1999) and identified water as comprising over 96% of the total mass flow through the cities.
Cities transform raw materials, fuel and water into the built environment, human biomass and waste (Decker et al. 2000). We use BIM(Building Information Modelling)

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility. A BIM is a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life-cycle; defined as existing from earliest conception to demolition.
Traditional building design was largely reliant upon two-dimensional drawings (plans, elevations, sections, etc.). BIM extends this beyond 3-D, augmenting the three primary spatial dimensions (width, height and depth) with time as the fourth dimension and cost as the fifth.

BIM software also defines objects parametrically; that is, the objects are defined as parameters and relations to other objects, so that if a related object is amended, dependent ones will automatically also change. Each model element can carry attributes for selecting and ordering them automatically, providing cost estimates and well as material tracking and ordering.

The idea of the City of the Future represents a major paradigm shift in the way new cities will be built or older ones retrofitted to achieve a change from the current unsustainable status to sustainability. At its core this shift involves mimic-ing the natural cycle when making development and operational decisions about water, energy and other material flows in and out of the city. This represents a radical change from the linear approach that has characterized the industrial and post-industrial effort to the present.

The ideal Ecopolis/Ecocity:
Operates on a self-contained economy, resources needed are found locally
Has completely carbon-neutral and renewable energy production
Has a well-planned city layout and public transportation system that makes the priority methods of transportation as follows possible: walking first, then cycling, and then public transportation.
Resource conservation maximizing efficiency of water and energy resources, constructing a waste management system that can recycle waste and reuse it, creating a zero-waste system
Restores environmentally damaged urban areas
Ensures decent and affordable housing for all socio-economic and ethnic groups and improve jobs opportunities for disadvantaged groups, such as women, minorities, and the disabled
Supports local agriculture and produce
Promotes voluntary simplicity in lifestyle choices, decreasing material consumption, and increasing awareness of environmental and sustainability issues.
In addition to these initial requirements, the city design must be able to grow and evolve as the population grows and the needs of the population change.

Subterranean Ecopolis

Underground facilities tend to use less energy. They can also protect people and equipment from the impacts of harsh climates and increasingly the impacts of climate change and radical climate events. As we explore resources in ever more inhospitable areas of the planet and the climate becomes increasingly unstable, going underground will increasingly make sense. In Tokyo a vast ‘cathedral’ underground has been developed as a flood containment area, to protect the cities underground train network.

Cities often have many miles of disused or underutilised tunnels and areas. As space becomes ever more expensive above ground, so putting more and different types of facilities underground will become more cost effective. Data centres are already regularly built underground to reduce energy requirements. There is a growing opportunity to map and assess the range of existing underground spaces beneath cities much of which is often not well mapped in older cities such as London, for alternative uses. Outside cities, exhausted mines have been targeted as potential sites for storing waste, carbon and other industrial applications. Could there now be a rethink on the potential range of uses for such workings. Will the mining industry be required to identify the potential for legacy / alternative uses of mines as part of the initial development?

How will it improve our quality of life?
Floating cities would help to reduce population density in urban areas, particularly in coastal regions, by offering additional real estate space (housing, mixed use, etc.) on a self-contained platform that is not dependent on limited land area.

Many concepts for floating cities incorporate sustainability into their design, including such features as solar and wind power, passive cooling, and self-contained gardens to feed inhabitants.

Issues, Barriers and Opportunities?
One of the most significant challenges facing the concept of floating cities is the sheer cost it would take to both develop and construct such structures. Research and development costs for such a structure could easily run into the billions of dollars, not to mention the cost of building a floating city. However, floating cities provide a unique opportunity to reduce population strain in urban centers and open up land that might have been used for housing for other purposes, such as agriculture or even biodiversity reserves.
